Whether you are driving the one-way streets of Newnan past stately homes, strolling the square downtown and admiring the well-preserved architectural array of past decades, or wandering the neighborhoods of beautifully restored homes, you will quickly recognize that Newnan is a quaint town of splendor and history.
The city’s grand history comes alive on Dec. 2 when the Piedmont Newnan Hospital Auxiliary hosts its 24th Tour of Homes. This major fundraising event benefits the Piedmont Newnan Hospital Outpatient Center and the Auxiliary’s annual scholarships. Held from 4–9 p.m., the Tour features homes in Cole Town/East Downtown, one of six historic districts in Newnan.
“The area looks forward to this event every year,” says Sue Livingston, president of the Auxiliary. “And the homeowners are always proud to show off their homes.”
This year, the Candlelight Tour features five homes, built from 1890 through 1937. All of the homes are within walking distance of the Historic Train Depot, where refreshments and parking are available. Visitors can begin their tour at any one of the beautiful homes, where they will discover unique features, architecture and décor.
For example, do you have any idea what a porte cochère is? This architectural element is a period feature of the Craftsman-style home at 79 E. Broad St. built for Frank Cole, Sr. in 1912. Next, step into a late Victorian-style home at 75 E. Broad St. that was originally built in 1905 for R.D. Cole, Jr. You'll marvel at the 12-foot cove ceilings, elaborate moldings and the rare Tree of Heaven in the backyard. Other homes not to be missed include the Roy Cole Place at 18 Robinson St., the Morris Borhman home at 12 Robinson St., and a 1890s circa home at 78 E. Broad St. piedmont
