There’s probably no better way to experience a lesson in photography than to follow a master through the beautiful landscape of his native land.
Greg Newington, an internationally published photographer with a studio and gallery at Serenbe, has begun offering a rare opportunity for photography enthusiasts to join him in an educational adventure. Through Australian Photographic Adventures, Newington takes participants on a private six-day photography workshop that travels to the Land Down Under.
Newington, a native Australian, said his desire to share some of his own experiences with others stems from 30 years as a magazine and newspaper photographer, visiting some of the most amazing places in the world and working with some of the world’s best photographers. He also loves showing people his country—the Outback’s characters and raw beauty.
“Especially, I love showing it to Americans as I’ve been treated with extraordinary hospitality here,” he says.
The Photographic Adventures workshop takes participants into the Outback of Australia during the spring or summer seasons. Newington, who conducted his first such workshop earlier this year, allows folks to select their own group or to join an existing scheduled tour. The tour travels by four-wheel drive from Adelaide through South Australia’s wine country to the historic town of Burra, which is where participants spend the first night. The next four nights and five days are spent exploring the largest mountain range in South Australia, the Flinders Ranges.
Throughout the workshop, Newington says he reveals some of his most secret and favorite photographic areas, while sharing local knowledge and photographic techniques that he has learned over the years. He says participants enjoy “photographing the rugged outback landscape with its vivid ochre-colored earth, vast cobalt blue skies, stunning sunsets and unique wildlife.”
Newington, who splits his time between Serenbe and Australia, says the first six-day workshop was such a success earlier this year that he plans to do nine more in 2012. The total cost for the six-day trip is $3,850 per person, which includes the professional instruction along with great local meals, luxury accommodations and transportation while in Australia. (Airfare to Australia is not included.)
Australian Photographic Adventures is also offering the opportunity to experience an 11-day workshop in the Outback that will take you to River Murray, Kangaroo Island and Flinders Ranges, with a huge accent on luxury travel. This tour, scheduled during February 2013, features a private chef and luxury accommodations, not to mention an original story of the adventure written by author, Matt Eberez, Newington’s Australian Photographic Adventures business partner.
