YA Books Unbound and Book Ends
Looking for something to keep your adolescent or teenager occupied this summer? Why not get them to join a book club at the local library? Check out the Dunwoody Library Book Club for young adults to see what they are reading.
spokesperson’s name:
Jessica Osborne, Youth Services Librarian
when do you meet:
YA Books Unbound (13- to 17-year-olds) meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m., and Book Ends (9- to 12-year-olds) meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m.
most recent selection:
Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins
what did your club have to say about it:
The book selection was actually a request from both groups. With the movie in production and the wildly popular status of the book, my clubs have been eager to read and discuss this selection. Says Publisher’s Weekly: “It’s a gripping story set in a postapocalyptic world where a replacement for the United States demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children to be used as gladiators in a televised fight to the death. Katniss, from what was once Appalachia, offers to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely focused on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the importance of holding on to one’s humanity in such inhuman circumstances.”
next on the list:
Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson for Book Ends; and Watership Down, by Richard Adams for YA
Books Unbound
what have been some of the club’s most favorite selections:
YA Books Unbound really enjoyed both Graceling by Kristin Cashore and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie. The Book Ends Club had a great time reading The Capture from the Guardians of Ga’Hoole series and The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.
